First Outsourced Program in 130 Year History Increases Facility Membership 28%

NEW YORK, January 2008 – The JCC MetroWest in West Orange, New Jersey turned to Plus One after completing a $24 million renovation towards the end of 2006. This decision allowed the JCC to concentrate on its core capabilities, while Plus One took over the reigns of the new Bildner Family Fitness Center.  Over the course of the year, Plus One has made significant improvements to many areas of the operation.

As part of the transition process, Plus One absorbed a third of the JCC positions and migrated the 3,200 existing memberships to a paperless electronic platform. During Plus One’s first twelve months of operations, the JCC MetroWest membership increased 28% to 4,100 memberships, while the average monthly dues rate was increased 34%.  Ancillary revenue per membership is also up 72%, largely as a result of a re-launched and re-purposed personal training program.  In addition, the number of group exercise classes offered has increased from 65 to 115 each week, and registration fees per membership are up 172%.

Success, however, did not come without its challenges.  Prior to choosing to partner with Plus One, the JCC MetroWest had operated internally for over 130 years.  A strong culture combining the experience of lay leaders with professional JCC executives had understandably emerged over time. Plus One needed to prove itself to both of these contingencies, as well as to the members and staff of the facility. The combination of unyielding energy and fresh ideas, however, made the transition project a resounding success.  In addition, new, cutting edge programs and services were added to the facility, including:

• Smart Start Orientation for all new members to assist them in learning about the unique features and benefits of the facility
• Full time Registered Dietician offering programs for children ages eight and up
• Prenatal Yoga and Massage
• Pilates Reformer Program
• Racquetball Program and Instructor
• Parent Free Zone – Fitness class for children in grades K – 8
• Chiropractor services on site
• Child care for children six weeks and older
• J Play – for kids in grades K – 5 in the gym with sports and games
