Plus One Health Management Awards ACSM Foundation Human Performance and Internet Technology Research Grant

NEW YORK, July 26, 2007Plus One Health Management, Inc. demonstrated their leadership in fostering new fitness training modalities by providing a $5,000 graduate student research grant to Joshua Ode of Michigan State University’s Center for Physical Activity and Health at the annual American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Awards Banquet.

The grant was designated for research in the area of physical activity and human performance, with an emphasis on innovative approaches to wellness solutions and education using Internet technology.  Mr. Ode, an ACSM member and graduate student, won for his research project, “The Assessment of Health Behaviors in College Students”.  The project used an internet based survey engine to gather physical activity and health related data on more than 900 college students enrolled in Michigan State University’s Healthy Lifestyles and Communications class.  Key findings determined that high school sports participation was a major factor in the current activity levels of college students; that college students who engaged in physical activity during their high school years outside of non-high school sponsored sports, such as physical education courses or intramurals, were more likely to be active during college; and that college students enrolled in MSU’s Healthy Lifestyle class were more likely to increase or maintain their current level of physical activity versus students who were not enrolled in the class.  These findings illustrate that promoting physical activity may influence continued healthy behaviors.

“Fostering new research—particularly using new technologies—helps ensure continuing benefits for the nation’s health,” said James R. Whitehead, Executive Vice President of ACSM. “We applaud Plus One for stepping forward. Our partnership encourages professionals to confirm what works most effectively today and to discover what new approaches will produce the most progress in the future.”

“We were proud to bestow this grant upon Mr. Ode,” said Plus One CEO Mike Motta. “Internet technology is and will continue to be an invaluable and ever-evolving tool in reaching out, educating and providing health solutions to a diverse populace. Mr. Ode is at the forefront of research on how best the professional fitness community can use the Internet to make a positive impact on public health.”
